2011 Board of Directors Applicants
Janice Dreher
I would like to accept the nomination for President Elect 2013. I feel I would be a great president for the following reasons:
1. I have been active on the board for the past 5 years. I have been involved with the board previously as a new ER nurse and have been mentored by Dee Burnell and Brenda Brown. I have seen the growth and changes in the ER nurse over the past 30 years.
2. I would like to be a part of helping to mentor new ER nurses. One of my goals is to help them to realize that they can make a difference by becoming involved at the local, state and national levels.
3. I feel very blessed and lucky to have such great mentors as Dawn, Deb and Alicia. You three have help me to realize that I can make a difference. I feel your knowledge and involvement at all the ENA levels has propelled me forward in my mentoring role. I realize that it does not matter your educational level, but your desire to help all ER nurses. It has helped me to to continue my education and career as well.
4. Since I have been a nurse for so long, I have many a good networking depository to pull from.
5. In my role as an educator, the classes I teach to the ER staff translates into better prepared ER nurses and better patient care. Which is what our main focus should always be - BEST PATIENT CARE. The more knowledge we can provide to the nurses, the stronger the nursing staff will be. Hopefully they can get excited as well and we can motivate them to want to be mentors as well.
6. I would like to be more involved at the national level. I know that this would be a stepping stone for that path.
7. I plan on being more involved in my area with recruitment by starting a SIG in the Baton Rouge area. Many of my nurses in my area would like to be more involved, this would be a way to encourage them to start.
8.I would of course need direction from all of you as mentors.
9. It would be a great honor to represent our state for ENA.

Intent and Goals: I would like become actively involved in the ENA to both educate myself and my peers about the continued changes in our profession and forward movement of new legislature in health care. I currently work at a small rural hospital, Bunkie General, and would like to bring my experiences and learning back to the facility to educate and motivate my colleagues and peers, along with myself. I am an experienced emergency room nurse with over 8 years experience, and served in the EMS field prior to nursing. I have previously worked at Huey P. Long, St. Francis Cabrini, and at Rapides Regional, all in the emergency departments. While I have valuable experience, I am most eager to continue learning and feel this would be a great opportunity to educate both myself and others to the world of the Emergency Nursing Association..

My heartfelt intentions are to continue to learn both on my own and from the experience of others that have traveled the path that I am just beginning. Utilizing both of these learning pathways will give me the greatest opportunity in which I can not only benefit personally, but that will also put me in the best position in which to assist in the advancement of Emergency Nursing in Louisiana. This past year I have been helping with the updates to the website which allows me to learn more about our organization and our members.
My goals would be to listen objectively and empathetically to my colleagues across the state in order for me to be a better representative of Louisiana Emergency Nurses as a whole and to try to assist with increasing our local membership. Nurses need to understand the power that comes with numbers and united we have a very powerful voice. This voice goes hand in hand with representation both at the state and federal level.

As an Emergency Room nurse with over 10 years of experience, and currently the Director of St. Elizabeth Emergency Department for the past 3 years, I am interested in becoming move involved with Louisiana ENA. I have many intents and goals for my involvement; however, one of the main objectives is to heighten awareness of the importance for nurses to become involved in their profession organizations at the State level. This provides a vehicle for Emergency nurses to have a voice in how they can promote their profession, and have some ownership of the future. Our region currently has a great potential to maximize participation and to collaborate with one another on various challenges we face on a daily basis. The ultimate goal would be to work in partnership with other nurses and leadership to optimize each other’s talents and resources to improve the delivery of care to our patients, as well as, provide the best resources and education for our nursing staff.

Throughout my membership I was able to observe how E.N.A. has contributed to the improvement in health care. I have witness the good, the bad and the ugly. Those changes inspired me to become active in the E.N.A. I am grateful to have Janice Dreher R.N. and Ms. Brenda Brown R.N., both E.N.A. Board Members as a mentor. After being asked to speak to the Livingston Parish M.O.M.S. Group, I became a member of their group. I am also a member of the Louisiana State Nurses Association and A.S.P.A.N, and the Bully Police Of Louisiana and U.S.A. (I know that sounds weird, a watch –dog organization advocating for Bullied Children & reporting on state anti-bullying laws. I am also a member of ASPAN, LAPAN, LSNA, ANA and BRNDA. I am also a Certification Coach for A.S.P.A.N. as well as C.A.P.A. and C.P.A.N. certified. I am planning to obtain my C.E.N. in the near future. I am a cheer coach for my daughter’s team and a volunteer band mom for my son’s high school.
I have been working on many projects such as a “Gumbo Box”, which is a parent’s safety tool box so to speak. I am also working on legislature in regards to Bulling in the Public School System. For the next four years I will be working closely with some of our local legislators to help reform health care. Also, I have been working with my daughter’s day care to try to get traffic signs nearby to warn other motorist because of the increase accidents in the area.
I would like a chance to become a board member to help make a difference, to take my words, thoughts and ideas and turn them in to an intervention to make change…. My “GUMBO” in a manner of speaking. I realize that I may not be as “seasoned” as many of the nurses on the board, but I feel that I have a solid base and, have the wisdom of a collected experience for probably 200 years of nursing to help mentor me.

Trish Erwin
I have been a member for 10 years. I am a CEN and ENPC provider.
I have served two previous terms on the board with the last 3 spent as Awards Committee Chairperson. I am applying for re-election in order to continue the important mission of this position. Currently, I am employed in an informatics capacity for an Emergency Department electronic record. This affords me the opportunity to visit Emergency Departments all over the state and teach about ENA and all of the benefits of not only being a member but an active member.
Rural Health Hospitals are definitely my passion and I have made it my mission to teach and provide any resources necessary that is needed for them as they have so many challenges and limitations with services for patient care. Not only do I teach them about ENA I am able to actively recruit new members to the organization.
I would appreciate your vote for another term in order to continue on my mission. I am always available as a resource and am here to help mentor any member or Emergency Department nurse in any capacity that I can. Emergency Nursing is my passion and ENA and its resources help me to provide safe practice and safe care.

I am asking that you, the membership, re-elect me to the Board of Directors for 2012. My hope for 2012 is to continue collaborating with LERN, DHH and all agencies involved in bringing the new Youth Concussion Law to all coaches, physicians and players .
Currently, I serve as Injury Prevention Chair and am eagerly looking forward to increasing the size of the IP committee to ensure that all injury prevention activities are disseminated to every area of the state.
Equally important is workplace violence legislation. We must, as healthcare professionals, come together with the cooperation and assistance of the state legislature to enact laws to protect us against violence. Governmental Affairs and Injury Prevention will work closely until this comes to fruition.
